Pascal Mayer, winner of the Breakthrough prize in Life Sciences 2022 for his discovery of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, which revolutionized DNA analysis. It is thanks to this technology, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), that DNA can now be analyzed at high speed and at a much lower cost. One of the keys to its technique is to create clusters of DNA by cutting the genome into small pieces, then making thousands of copies of them and grouping them into islands of sorts. Taken together, they can be read simultaneously and more easily by fluorescence. For example, sequencing of the first complete human genome was completed in 2003, after ten years and an investment of more than $1 billion dollars. Thanks to NGS, also called massively parallel sequencing, this process can now be done overnight and costs $1,000. Massively parallel sequencing is now widely used worldwide for the diagnosis and treatment of certain cancers and rare diseases, in forensic investigations or for sequencing COVID and its variants.

Dr. Pascal Mayer is currently Head of the research and scientific company Alphanosos, which he created in 2014 at the Biopole Clermont-Liman Science Center. After studying at the University of Strasbourg and completing postdoctoral internships in Canada and France, Mayer first tested his idea in Geneva, at the research center of a pharmaceutical company.

The Breakthrough Prize recognizes the latest scientific breakthroughs, has an impressive $3 million prize. Pascal intends to reinvest some of these funds to support the development of projects carried out by his company Alphanosos. Following "Next Generation Sequencing" (NGS), thanks to its rapid detection platform driven by artificial intelligence, is the development of "Next Generation Therapeutics" against pathogens, particularly those associated with eczema, acne, psoriasis and gonorrhea, as well as COVID-19.
